About

Gabriele Campagna

Italian violinist Gabriele Campagna combines in his work the roles of performer and composer. Alongside his position as a member of the second violin section of the Bamberger Symphoniker, he regularly performs as a soloist and in chamber ensembles. His compositions and arrangements have been performed around the world, while the films he has contributed to as an orchestrator or composer have received awards at international festivals.

With the Bamberger Symphoniker, he has had the opportunity to perform in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and many others. As a chamber musician or solo violinist, he has performed for the Bamberger Symphoniker’s season, the “Concerti del Quirinale” in Rome, the Mendelssohn House in Leipzig, the Austrian Cultural Forum in Rome, the Teatro di Villa Torlonia, and various other theaters and concert halls in Germany and Italy.

His works have been performed in important venues in Italy and Europe, including the Joseph Keilberth Saal and Hegelsaal in Bamberg, the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, the Accademia Hall of the Rome Conservatory, and the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. He regularly collaborates as an orchestrator on Italian and international films and television series; films he has worked on have been presented at the Venice, Toronto, Locarno, San Sebastián, Sarajevo, and other film festivals.

His interest in historical performance practice led him to study the baroque violin, both at the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig and in masterclasses with musicians such as Erich Höbarth, Giuliano Carmignola, Rachel Podger, Midori Seiler, Marco Serino, and others. Performing on historical instruments, he appears (also as concertmaster) in recordings with major ensembles (such as Ensemble Cordia, Helsinki Baroque, and others), and has taken part in renowned early music festivals. Motivated by his passion for early or rarely performed repertoire, he has devoted himself to the reconstruction of lost or incomplete compositions, some of which have been performed in modern times for the first time.

In addition to his classical work, Gabriele has a strong passion for jazz violin and, above all, for traditional Irish music. He regularly takes part in Irish sessions as a fiddler and his engagement with this repertoire has led him to explore the connections between folk traditions and classical forms.

Born in Rome in 1989, he began his piano studies with Paolo Matteucci before being admitted to the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, where he studied violin and composition with Maurizio Pepe and Giovan Battista Luca. He graduated with honors and distinction in violin in 2013, and in composition in 2014. He was then admitted to the Master’s program at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy” in Leipzig, where he studied with Prof. Erich Höbarth (first violin of the Quatuor Mosaïques and Concentus Musicus Wien). He was later selected as a “Meisterstudent” in the same class. He also holds a diploma in piano

He is a prizewinner in solo and chamber music competitions; in 2018, he was selected as third concertmaster with the Hofer Symphoniker, and since 2022 he has been a member of the second violin section of the Bamberger Symphoniker. Gabriele plays a 1745 violin by Tomaso Eberle.
